Kitten Support

There are often more kittens than resources to help them.

Starting in early spring each year, thousands of kittens flood area shelters and rescues, filling them to capacity. This “kitten season,” which typically lasts until late October, puts enormous strain on animal welfare organizations.

Low cost spay and neuter services

Overflow during kitten season can only be solved by ensuring that every cat gets spayed or neutered.

Female cats can go into heat and get pregnant as early as 4 months old and can have multiple litters each year. Contrary to popular belief, cats will mate with their siblings, parents, offspring and other relatives, so don’t get caught with a surprise litter.

Low-cost spay/neuter services are available through several organizations:

TAS operates a mobile spay/neuter clinic for residents with a household income less than $50,000 with subsidized or waived fees.

Their Public Veterinary Services clinic offers discounted spay/neuter services (based on eligibility) for both cats and dogs.

Surrendering kittens to TCR

Toronto Cat Rescue will accept the surrender of eligible kittens, depending on available foster care. 

To help us save the most lives possible, we ask people wishing to surrender a litter of kittens to consider keeping them in their home until they are at least 8 weeks of age. Some additional common questions we receive regarding kitten surrenders are:

When surrendering a litter of kittens to TCR, we will spay and vaccinate the mom for you at no charge (although donations are appreciated!). Mom will be returned to you, and both of you can rest assured that her breeding days are over.

Once the surrender has been completed, you will be ineligible to adopt any of the kittens. TCR receives hundreds of inquiries each day from wonderful families who want to provide a great home for a kitten. Rest assured that we will find happy homes for all of them.

If you still wish to surrender your kittens, please complete the Kitten Intake form to request the surrender of your kitten(s). Once we have received your request, a volunteer will be in touch to gather more information to determine eligibility and advise you of the next steps.
