About the Role
As a Health Care Case Advisor, you will work as part of a high-functioning, multi-faceted team that triages health issues for cats and kittens within TCR’s foster program. You will communicate with foster homes to triage issues and resolve minor health concerns in a cost-effective way that promotes the health and well-being of each cat or kitten.
This is a great volunteer opportunity for students in VT, VA and DVM programs. Rescue animals present with some of the most interesting and challenging symptoms, so this role can help you grow your knowledge base while helping many rescue cats recover from a variety of illnesses.
Key Responsibilities
- Communicate with foster homes to triage health issues for cats and kittens in our foster program.
- Help resolve minor health concerns in a cost-effective way that promotes each cat’s health and well-being.
- De-escalate reactive responses from invested caretakers and support them through caring for sick and injured cats.
- Make difficult, objective decisions in accordance with TCR’s best practices and internal policies.
- Respond to email in a timely manner.
- Manage a heavier workload during kitten season (May to November).
Qualifications & Expectations
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Basic understanding of common illnesses and their treatment and medication, as well as the ability to learn cat-related medical terminology.
- Medical, rescue or shelter experience, or extensive knowledge of cat health through fostering.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and deal with sick and injured cats on a regular basis.
- Proficient with Google applications (Sheets, Docs and Drive) and Smartsheet, with a willingness to learn. Training will be provided.
- Strong teamwork, problem-solving and professional communication skills to work with staff, team leads and volunteers on the Healthcare Team.
- Detail-oriented work ethic and the ability to follow strict TCR protocols and guidelines using good judgment.
- Knowledge of Toronto Cat Rescue is an asset.
Time Commitment & Location
Location: Remote, with access to a smartphone and a computer or laptop.
Schedule: Flexible, with a heavier workload during kitten season (May to November).
Time commitment: Approximately one hour per day.
Training new members takes time. As such, we ask that applicants be available to commit at least 6 months of their time.
