Matthews Story: Responding to Abandonment with Love

WARNING: this story may be upsetting to read, as it includes details of animal abandonment and neglect.

Meet Matthew…

Matthew is a beautiful boy, and while we can confirm he’s now happily with a forever family, his story recently has been an upsetting one of callous abandonment and neglect.

Just last week Matthew was found tied up in numerous bags and left by a wooded embankment in rural Ontario.

He was tied up in separate grocery bags in a way that meant he couldn’t move his legs or feet.

The jogger who found Matthew called a local shelter and animal control to rescue the poor cat. He then waited with him until they arrived, keeping him calm and comforting him.

The rescue team felt that he’d been left there to die, and after cutting him free of the bag they found he didn’t have a microchip, and that he’s about one year old.

Matthew also isn’t spayed, which is another reason he may have been abandoned like this.

After a short stay at the shelter and the vet, the Toronto Cat Rescue heroic Waterloo Region team jumped to Matthew’s aid.

Due to our longstanding partnership with the shelter, they contacted us immediately, because they knew we’d do what was needed to quickly get Matthew to a safe and loving new home.

And we’re happy to report that in less than a week this gorgeous boy has been adopted by his new forever family, a lovely young couple from the local area.

Oh, and why the name ‘Matthew’?

That’s after the heroic jogger ‘Matt’, without whom we may have never reached this poor little guy.

Matthew, newly nicknamed ‘Matty’, is now happy in his forever home. He’s with his new parents, Drew and Ashley, and sibling Mac. Mac was rescued after being found during a rainstorm, also abandoned in a bag.

Drew and Ashley had read about Matthew’s story in the news and when they went to the pet store to get a sibling for Mac, Matthew was already there waiting like it was fate!

The two cats get along great. They have successfully bonded, and it’s safe to say Matthew’s ordeal is over, and he now has a loving home he deserves.

Toronto Cat Rescue will always respond quickly to cases like Matthew’s, responding with the urgency this requires.

And we’re able to do this through the support of our supporters, volunteers, and donors like you!
